F I L T R A T I O N A P P L I C A T I O N S Two Tate Andale model KBF 36-inch automated self-cleaning strainers were recently installed for protection of the control valves at a water treatment plant. By incorporating the wedgewire screening design Tate Andale was able to utilize a larger open area and reduce the size of the unit to meet inlet and outlet piping dimensions. Tate Andale manufactures strainers, filtration, and various sizes of wedgewire screen to meet customer specifications with minimum pressure drop and debris loading. C H E M I C A L A P P L I C A T I O N S Cooling Tower Project M A J O R B R E W E R Y P R O J E C T Another success story has taken place at a major brewery. The removal of calcium carbonate was performed on two ammonia condensers. The units had efficiency losses of 30 percent depending on ambient temperatures. As illustrated in our photographs, the tube bundles were covered with scale similar to the water distribution pipe with nozzles. After three cleaning periods of utilizing the product (4 to 5 hour periods or 1.5 days) the tubes cleaned down to the bare metal. Flow from the header pipes and nozzles was improved with the removal of calcium that was present in the water distribution system. The only scale deposits left on the system were the distribution pipes where the product was not able to reach due to the nozzle spray pattern. Illustrated in these pictures is the effects of the product in contact with the calcium carbonate that creates a foaming action and release of carbon dioxide. This is an indicator that the product is working to remove water formed deposits. After the cleaning, galvanizing was done by a local contractor to prevent oxidation of the ammonia tubes. Upon completing this task the units were placed on line. The operators were able to run the units dry with just ambient temperatures providing enough cooling in order not to trip the units into a shut down mode. This could not be accomplished with the units in the previous condition. (Efficiencies of an evaporative ammonia condensers can be reduced by 30 percent if 1/16 to 1/32 inch of scale accumulates on the tube section of the condenser.) Estimated efficiency of the units at the brewery is now expected to be about 95 percent or better. F A N S & B L O W E R S This fan was constructed in three pieces to allow for ease of installation in a confined area. The fan was disassembled and then re-assembled for operation.
